I have been Club president for almost 4 years, and a member for 30 years.
My aims for the Club are for it to grow and thrive well into the future. We have a long and proud history going back to the 1920s as one of the premier clubs in Christchurch and our goal is to ensure that success into the future. To do this we recognise that society has changed and ensure that we offer what our current members want.
We are currently participating in an Athletics NZ sponsored Club Development Program that supports already succeeding clubs to be a more successful and sustainable by providing the environment and services our members tell us they want.
Under this program a key goal is a more seamless progression from children’s grades to seniors. We know there is a drop off from sport (all forms) in early teenage years and we aim to help young people stay in the sport for a lifetime.
Another goal is to be more welcoming to all runners of any level of ability and allow average runners to see that a Club is not a daunting place, rather where you can find running buddies and get coaching. We also want to provide clear pathways and support for members to progress however they want, be that to a coach, administrator, official and of course to continue running for a lifetime.
I joined this club some 20 years ago as a masters grade runner and gradually became involved in helping out with club activities.
My role as Secretary is to be the first point of contact, to maintain correspondence and meeting records, supporting the President and Treasurer. I have been Secretary now for 10 years and am also a Club selector for relay teams and do the race entry administration.
I still participate in events, enjoy keeping fit and competing in my age group, as well as the camaraderie of membership.
